The Parker County Peach Festival opens at 8 a.m. on Saturdays, so get there early.

The best peaches and desserts go fast. So, browse through Weatherford Town Center Square and then, if you still have room, sit down for an early lunch.

Most restaurants in Weatherford have some kind of fishing special. So anything you haven’t tried downtown – from bellini pies – you can probably find it on a menu.

â–ª Shep’sAt 202 Fort Worth Highway (US 180) near the plaza, whip up two specialty peach burgers with its regular menu of 19 different burgers, cheeseburgers, turkey burgers, or veggies.

For Fishing Week, Shep’s offers a burger with gallo ‘peach-o’ and Swiss with fries or crisps ($ 10, but choose the upgrade to onion rings – $ 12.50 and it’s worth it).

It comes with Shep’s thick, hand-wrapped burger. (I would choose Pepper Jack to balance the sweet pico and Hawaiian sweetbread buns.)

There’s also a caprese peach burger with grilled peaches, mozzarella, tomatoes, and pesto. Or combine the best of both peach worlds in a mixed green salad with grilled peaches and pico de peach ($ 8).

For dessert, there’s a choice of Peach Cheesecake flavors from Windy Hill Farm Bakery: either Peach Cream Cheesecake or Peach Cheesecake ($ 8).

The bar side of Shep’s serves martinis for fishing and Moscow mules for fishing. But lunch is too early for that. (Right?)

Shep’s free menu also has chili burgers, jalapenos, mushrooms, grilled pineapple, chili, or spinach, and I left out half of the options.

The menu also offers a choice of nine salads, five different hot dogs and other sandwiches.

If the location is unfamiliar, Shep opened on Main Street before moving on to a sports grill concept a block away.

â–ª If you don’t stop before you are on your way back, the Malting, 2028 Fort Worth Highway, is the place to stop for year round homemade ice cream, now in 10 flavors, including peach and blueberry.

It’s a classic 1958 drive-through where you order at the window and wait in your car to hear your name through the speaker. The busiest night is Tuesday, when burgers are half price.

Don’t expect fine dining, but expect ice cream, toffee milkshakes, and old-fashioned malts.
