Michigan’s Best Local Dishes: Big Guy Catering Born From The COVID Pandemic

JACKSON, MI – Jeremiah Hephzibah was placed on leave of absence from his position as executive chef at the University of Michigan at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ready for change, Big Guy Catering was born.

“It forced me to take a position in which I have always wanted to occupy my own business,” he said. “This prompted us to get into the business. “

Hephzibah has operated the catering and food truck with his wife, Ella, for two years.

“It’s going pretty well,” he said. “We are growing slowly but surely. Our food is basically good food for people. I try to stick to the highest quality ingredients to deliver a better product. People who love food can taste the difference.

Hephzibah keeps the menu tight on the food truck. While in downtown Jackson on a recent evening cruise, the truck offered three items: Philly Cheese Steak Nachos, Confit Bacon Burger, and Steak and Bacon Wrap. Homemade tortilla chips were featured in the nachos.

“I think people appreciate the freshness and the quality that is offered,” he said.

Throughout the pandemic, the couple have had to get creative with the business and they love the flexibility of the food truck.

“We are unique in the way we do business,” said Ella Hephzibah. “We want people to feel the passion in everything we do. “
