Loraine Radcliffe is the new receptionist at the Wild Boar Inn near Crook
A 65-year-old Windermere resident landed an in-room customer service position to launch a new career in the hotel and restaurant industry.
Having moved to Yorkshire’s Lake District earlier this year, Loraine Radcliffe is the new receptionist at the Wild Boar Inn near Crook.
While many of his friends and contemporaries were busy thinking about retirement, Loraine was looking for an entirely different challenge.
The Lake District is her favorite place and she owned a holiday caravan in the area when her son was a child. So she decided that she would throw sticks, found a new home, and look for a job in South Lakeland.
“I was amazed at the number of jobs available”, explains Loraine: “The name of Wild Boar jumped out at me because I already knew the inn and I liked to dine there. I initially applied for the wedding and events coordinator position but when it was taken the General Manager asked me if I was interested in the receptionist role.
“I said to myself: ‘this is a good new challenge. Some of my friends don’t envy me getting up at 6 a.m. for a morning shift, but I love the job.
Retirement is not for me. Whatever your age, have no fear. Go for it. You never know what you might be missing out on if you don’t.
Loraine is from West Yorkshire and his longest career role has been as Civic Affairs Officer for the Bradford Mayor’s Office. In this role, she managed a team of 12 people and was responsible for all civic events, including royal visits, civic parades, ceremonies, meetings and conferences. She even met the Queen on a momentous occasion.
The death of her husband in 2016 was a turning point for Loraine and her son Jamie encouraged her to try something new. She had a secret ambition to be a representative for the holidays, made a few nominations and was appointed to work for Saga at Carbis Bay in Cornwall. She worked there for two seasons and two more in Europe on river cruises along the Danube and Rhine.
Adam Bujok of English Lakes Hotels Resorts & Venues said, “Lorraine fits naturally into the team and brings a wealth of experience. She got excited about The Wild Boar in her interview and we were delighted to recruit her.
“She is completely at ease interacting with guests and makes it her mission to ensure guests have the best possible stay.”
