Kwik Trip plans to open on September 10 | News, Sports, Jobs

Workers were busy installing the equipment and preparing the new Kwik Trip store in New Ulm for its scheduled opening on September 10.

NEW ULM – Work on the North Broadway Kwik Trip is progressing and the new store should be ready for its early opening at 5 a.m. on Friday, September 10.

Steve Wrobel, public relations representative for Kwik Trip, said work crews are installing devices, dispensers and other equipment in the new store which is being built on the front of the old Running parking lot on Broadway between 16th North and 17th North Street.

Plans are to open on September 10 and then have a grand opening on September 28, with a ribbon cutting at 11 a.m. that day.

A team of 40 colleagues is being hired and will be led by building manager Carrita Anderson.

The new Kwik Trip and the current one will be separate operations, with their own management, although it is possible to share some operations and personnel.

Wrobel said Kwik Trip is excited to add a new store in New Ulm.

“We believe New Ulm is a city that can accommodate two stores, and we are happy to open this one”, he said.

The new store will be larger in square footage than the South Broadway store, and it will feature a side diesel awning that will accommodate tractor-trailers, something the South Broadway location lacks.

The new store will have a larger kitchen than the South Broadway store.

Food is an important part of Kwik Trip’s business plan, Wrobel said. Its stores function as corner grocery stores where people can buy bread, eggs, milk and other items. They also offer ready-to-eat meals, many of which are prepared on site.

Wrobel said that Kwik Trip produces about 80 percent of the food products it sells, at processing centers in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, where the company is based. He has his own dairy, kitchen and bakery, where he makes sandwiches, pizzas and other main dishes. These are shipped to stores every day.

This has limited Kwik Trip’s area of activity to Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, and now Illinois. Kwik Trip stores are also known as Kwik Star in Iowa. In recent years, it has acquired Stop n Go stores in Wisconsin and Illinois.

Kwik Trip is a private family business owned by four generations of the Don and LaVonne Zietlow family.
