While the government has said there is no need to cancel the Christmas holidays, Health Secretary Sajid Javid has advised people to take a Covid test before going to a social gathering, including professional festivities.
However, office Christmas parties are being canceled and employees are encouraged to work from home as companies take precautions despite assurances from ministers. Some restaurants are also reporting a tendency not to show up as the evenings recede at the last minute.
Restaurants and bars have been hit by a staff crisis since the summer, triggered by the pandemic and Brexit, and increased demand from customers to resume eating and drinking after the lifting of covid restrictions.
It is estimated that there are around 1.2 million vacant positions in the UK as the country faces a labor shortage.
