Cooks still use the same high-quality ingredients and measurements they used 70 years ago, whether it’s ‘Grandpa’s Secret Recipe’ pancakes, made from homemade bread and cobbler house, or the famous fish and chips. Rick Mossman began his career in the restaurant and catering industry.
Rick watched in amazement as his grandfather prepared meals for hundreds of people in the Civic Auditorium, which is now the Rabobank Theater. He was even more surprised when he saw his father feed 7,000 people in one day in a community over 100 miles from Bakersfield.

“Mossman’s cafe and restaurant has been a Bakersfield staple for nearly 60 years. They have a second location in the South/West, on Wible rd, south of Planz rd. Someone has described Mossman’s coffee as no-frills, but great coffee. I ordered bacon and eggs with pancakes. That was delicious. Two pancakes could feed two people, they are huge. Mossman’s is known for its delicious fish and chips, best cookies and gravy and great pancakes.” – John H.
Cafe Umaga first opened in January 2020. The business was formed by a husband and wife team who both work as nurses. They had to think of new ways to grow the business while serving as community leaders. They started by introducing their products to the community through pop-up shops, and they used the website and social media to build their online presence and market the business.
They are excited to promote and supply quality and great tasting Filipino coffee in response to the growing demand for specialty coffee. Due to its ideal climate and rich soils in the lowlands and mountains, the Philippines is one of the few countries to produce all four commercially viable varieties of coffee: Arabica, Liberica, Excelsa and Robusta.
Their mission, as Bakersfield’s premier Filipino cafe, is to provide a stylish, fun, and welcoming neighborhood cafe where they can showcase flavors that most Filipinos grew up loving and enjoying. The twisted pastries offer a refreshing change from the usual fare and pair well with great coffee. The Umaga Café is a place that celebrates variety and brings people together to appreciate their differences and bond.

“Filipino coffee. Very casual, casual cafe with Filipino specialties like ube flavored drinks and pastries. We had the Caramel Moringa Romance with coconut milk, the Calamansi Berry Refresher, the Ube Marble Bread and the Black Kutsinta rice cakes. Get the Moringa with coconut milk for sure, it’s light like Japanese matcha with the right sweetness from the caramel and coconut. Calamansi Berry has fresh fruit and mint for a light sweetness. Ube’s marble cake is like bread pudding, but the black Kutsinta was deliciously sweet and chewy. Vegetarian pastries and drinks, vegan milk options for drinks. – Jenel S.
Cafe Dagny is a local cafe located at the corner of 20th and Eye streets in downtown Bakersfield. Bakersfield has something for everyone, and Dagny’s is unquestionably the center of it all. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee, cookies, cakes and scones baked in the kitchen greets you as you enter. Dagny’s was established in the mid-1990s and has proudly served the Bakersfield community ever since. Locals know the cafe’s classic 1940s storefront.
The quality and freshness of their signature coffees and teas are recognized. They offer light to dark roast coffees from the California coast and partner with Supreme Bean Coffee Roasters in North Hollywood to bring the best coffee to Bakersfield.
Address: 1600 20th St #3902, Bakersfield, CA 93301
“Dagny is a perfect example of why local cafes are so valuable. Delicious drinks. Good atmosphere. Community and cultural space. Helpful and friendly staff. Follow them on Facebook as they have free concerts from local bands inside the facility. Few places like this in Bakersfield. Excellent location with historic theaters and art murals nearby. If there is no concert, you can take a walk in the city center after having your drink. – Joshua C.
Urban cafe serves fire-baked focaccia sandwiches and salads. It all started in 2003 when owner Tom Holt saw a need in Ventura’s restaurant industry and decided to fill it. He was looking for a unique sandwich and salad that would satisfy his craving for tasty meals. Because he knew the best sandwiches started with the best bread, he built the cafe around a deck oven.
Together, he and his friend Pete developed a bread recipe that was soft, delicious, and baked right before your eyes. But he didn’t stop there; he has crafted a menu using local produce, home-roasted meats, and artisan sauces to give each dish its own unique flavor.

“Very clean, friendly service and delicious food. I liked the many vegetarian options, but since I try to incorporate fish into my diet occasionally, the ahi tuna options were also very nice. My son had the southwest chicken sandwich and loved it. My Ahi salad was also delicious. – Kevin G.
Bonnie’s best coffee
Bonnie’s best coffee is the place to go for a cup of coffee, a scone or muffin in the morning, a great sandwich, soup or salad for lunch, and a takeaway casserole ready to heat up and serve in the evening. Bonnie’s Best Cafe began with two unique beginnings: a sandwich and a casserole, both created by the original Bonnie. When the former owners’ passions blossomed into other life adventures in October 2006, dedicated employee Laurie Watson became the owner of Bonnie’s Best.
Through a true labor of love, Laurie Watson transformed Bonnie’s Best into the legendary little cafe known as the home of the original Best Sandwich in Bakersfield.
